Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner silent amid transgender rights rollback

Many see Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner as a moderating influence in the current administration particularly on issues like climate change and LGBT rights.

In early February, the New York Times reported, "The two most influential social liberals in President Trump's inner circle — daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner — helped kill a proposed executive order that would have scrapped Obama-era L.G.B.T. protections, according to people familiar with the issue."

Considering their reported involvement in that order, a Politico piece says it's noteworthy that they have remained silent after "the White House on Wednesday revoked protections that had allowed transgender students to use the public school bathroom of their choice."

The media outlet notes, "A spokeswoman for Ivanka Trump declined to comment on Trump's position. A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment about Kushner's position.

The couple's silence has also spurred many to wonder about the consistency of their involvement in issues that pertain to LGBT rights.

That issue aside, Ivanka and Jared have been seen participating in quite a few public events recently.

A reporter asked during a White House press conference on Thursday, "Ivanka Trump was in the White House today for a meeting on human trafficking. She had this meeting on CEOs. We saw her in a smaller session here at the White House today. What exactly is her role here?"

Sean Spicer responded, "I think her role is to be helpful and provide input on a variety of areas that she has deep, passionate concerns about, especially in the area of women in the workforce and empowering women. She is someone who has a lot of expertise and wants to offer that, especially in the area of trying to help women."
