Retailer slammed for Anne Frank Halloween costume following uproar

Updated

A Halloween store is facing heavy criticism for selling an Anne Frank costume for children.

The popular online costume retailer, Halloween.com, had previously listed the controversial costume complete with a wig, beret and brown satchel. Selling for almost 25 Euros, the outfit quickly floated around Twitter, where they were slammed for the product.

The costume's description read: “World War II shook the world in a way that no one could have foreseen. It showed us what true and mettle were. It also created some unexpected heroes, where even a young girl like Anne Frank with nothing but a diary and hope could become an inspiration to us all.”

A spokesman for the Anne Frank Center commented on the "offensive" costume to Fox News. “There are more appropriate ways to commemorate the legacy of Anne Frank than through a Halloween costume, which is offensive and trivializes her suffering and the suffering of millions during the Holocaust. We are pleased that the costume has been pulled,” said Alexandra DeVitt to the outlet.

The retailer has recently pulled down the costume, issuing an apology for the product.

However, other retailers are selling similar Anne Frank-inspired costumes for Halloween. If you visit the website The Halloween Spot, you'll find a comparable getup named "The Evacuee Girl Costume."

Candy Apple Costumes sells the same getup, maintaining that the daughter of buyers will look "pretty and historically accurate for her school play or project in our girls' World War II Evacuee Girl costume." Amazon, too, is selling the same outfit as Halloween.com, but calling it a "World War II Evacuee Girl."
