Staff Report

Sunday marked the end of a 60-mile journey and the beginning of life-long memories and friendships created as the Susan G. Komen Atlanta 3-Day came to a close. More than 1,000 breast cancer walkers crossed the finish line in an effort to end breast cancer forever. Together, these spirited participants raised more than $3.2 million for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.

“Walking 60 miles is no easy feat, but we walk because we can and because it matters,” said Sheri Prentiss, national spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day®. “We are humbled by the strength of these Susan G. Komen Atlanta 3-Day participants and so thankful for their continued support as we fight to end this disease.”

The Komen 3-Day is more than just walking 60 miles in one weekend; it’s a life-changing experience participants embark on months before when they begin training and fundraising in their communities. Participants, who spent the entire weekend walking 60 miles through Atlanta communities -- including Decatur -- and camping in pink tents at Georgia World Congress Center, concluded their three-day journey at Turner Field.

Since its inception in 2003, the 3-Day® has raised more than $750 million. Last year, Susan G. Komen community grants provided financial and social support for more than 50,000 families impacted by breast cancer. Money raised by the 3-Day has helped lead to new technologies like Lymphoseek®, a new imaging agent that more accurately identifies cancer-containing lymph nodes.
