Oana Lungescu (born 29 June 1958) is a Romanian journalist with philological education (English and Spanish). Between 2010 and September 2023 she has been the principal NATO spokesperson. In 2024 she joined the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a UK defence and security think tank.
Ms Lungescu is the first woman and first journalist to hold this position, the first to be born behind the Iron Curtain, and the longest-serving NATO Spokesperson to date. Oana Lungescu, the longest serving NATO Spokesperson, was appointed a Distinguished Fellow at RUSI for an initial period of three years. She has directed alliance communications during the most turbulent period in a generation, providing strategic advice to two Secretaries General, Jens Stoltenberg and Anders Fogh Rasmussen. She also directed NATO's media operations, directed the media aspects of all NATO events, and pioneered the concept of "pre-bunking" disinformation.
