RECALL ALERT: Mislabeled M&M's Could Cause Problems for Peanut Allergy Sufferers

Boxes of the improperly labeled candy were shipped to Georgia.

Mars Chocolate North America has issued a voluntary recall on its M&M’s Brand Milk Chocolate Theater Box 3.4 ounce packages. It seems the milk chocolate candy may actually contain peanut butter due to a packaging mix up.

While the inside label on the theater box has the proper packaging, Mars issued the voluntary recall to ensure consumers knew about the labeling snafu, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a media release.

“People who have allergies to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if their theater box contains an inner M&Ms Brand Peanut Butter bag and they consume the product,” the release said. “No adverse reactions have been reported to date.”

The issue was brought to the FDA’s attention by a consumer.

The mislabeled packages were shipped to warehouses between May 8 and July 1 in a number of states, including Georgia. Consumers can return the candy to the store where they purchased it from for a full refund. Mars is also working with local retailers to ensure the candy is pulled from the shelves.
