Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is no stranger to the Twitterverse. In fact, after Barack Obama, he is the most followed world leader on Twitter, with over 12 million followers.

Narendra Modi hasn't necessarily been effective in promoting gender equality, but his recent Twitter campaign has definitely helped him to earn some brownie points. He's in dire need of these brownie points, too: After giving praise to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister "despite being a woman", people were--as you can imagine--not very happy with him.

By launching his viral #SelfieWithDaughter campaign, Modi has shown that he actually is somewhat capable of dealing with women.

In a monthly radio address, the Prime Minister asked moms and dads to participate for the campaign and post photos to Twitter with the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter.

The campaign aims at a larger goal, though. Modi is striving to recognize and celebrate girls in India. This is a part of his "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) campaign.

In a country where the births of boys greatly outnumber the births of girls each year, recognizing women becomes increasingly important.

In the historically patriarchal Indian society, many baby girls are killed immediately at birth because they're considered to be less desirable. In fact, a report that was released earlier this year estimated that as many as 2,000 girls a day are killed.

Even if this Twitter campaign only makes a small difference in the perception of young Indian women, anything helps.
