On Friday morning, Gordie Howe died at 88 years old in Ohio, according to CBS Detroit. Howe is one of the greatest players to ever grace the ice, playing from 1946-71 before playing in the World Hockey Association for seven seasons. In 1979, Howe returned to the National Hockey League to play with his sons, finishing with the Hartford Whalers.

Howe was the NHL's all-time leading scorer with 801 goals and 1,850 points before Wayne Gretzky came along and shattered his records. Still, Howe will forever be known as Mr. Hockey and has a hat trick named after him, one a player records with a goal, assist and fight.

Howe led the NHL in points six times and once broke the 100-point barrier in an era that didn't see that accomplishment often. He also won four Stanley Cup championships with the Red Wings, being the leader of one of the great teams of all-time.

Howe's passing is the end of an era for many hockey fans, who lived for the rough nature of the game before ample rules were changed to protect players. Howe was the epitome of a man's man, and undoubtedly will be honored in a large way before Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final.
