Dozens of workers tested for HIV after receiving unsafe flu shots

Almost 70 employees at a pharmaceutical company are being tested for multiple diseases after receiving unsafe flu shots.

News 12 reports that the workers will be tested for hepatitis and HIV, among other blood-borne illnesses. They are all employees at Oksuka, a Japanese pharmaceutical corporation at their location in New Jersey.

Officials with TotalWellness said the nurse who administered the shots in September gave people wrong dosage of the drug and that the nurse "failed to follow proper medical procedures and safeguards," according to WCAU.

The nurse who administered the botched flu vaccine has not been named.

"Syringe reuse may have exposed you to infected blood. At this time NJDOH is not aware of any disease transmission, but you may be at risk for developing an infection as a result of this improper practice," the health department added.

Luckily, experts believe that the risk of infection any of the workers contracted any of the disease is low.

Health department officials are providing workers with another round of flu vaccinations as well as one for hepatitis.

"The vaccinations are for hepatitis B and vaccinations for flu shots," West Windsor Health Department member Jill Swanson told News 12.

The nurse who administered the botched flu vaccine has not been named. It is unclear if there will be any disciplinary or legal actions taken against the nurse.
