Surf's Pup! Dogs Make Waves at Annual Dog-Surfing Contest

Yesterday was a big day for the surfing world. And no, it wasn't Mick Fanning having another close encounter with a shark.

The 10th annual Unleashed by Petco surf dog competition kicked off this weekend and the four-legged competitors are making a big splash.

The competition -- which has over 50 canine contestants -- sees dogs of all breeds and sizes hang ten in the ocean with all of the style and finesse of the most gnarly pro surfers out there.

Take a look at the event in the gallery below:

The pups are scored by a panel of judges -- which, for the second year in a row, includes pro surfer Taylor Knox -- on three different criteria: length of time spent on the board, size of the wave, and perceived comfort while on the board.

But based on these awesome action shots, we think every pup there deserved a medal.
