Koenigsegg building Agera RS homologated for US

Koenigsegg is in the process of building the seventh example of the new Agera RS, and it's destined for a customer right here in the United States. In fact it's the first example of the Swedish automaker's latest ultra-supercar to be certified to US specifications. And once complete, it will be one of the fastest, most powerful production automobiles ever to grace the great American road.

The Agera RS, as you may recall, supersedes the previous Agera R and Agera S, and bridges the gap to the more extreme One:1 with 1,160 horsepower on tap. Christian von Koenigsegg and company will only build 25 examples of the Agera RS, the majority of which have already been spoken for. Four of them have already been built, with another six currently in various stages of production, representing the first ten that were pre-sold before the vehicle was even unveiled.

This US-bound example is the seventh in line and only the 128th vehicle Koenigsegg will have built in its history. And while it may be the first Agera RS headed for these United States, it's not the first Koenigsegg to reach these shores. Company spokesman Oscar Bergfelt told Autoblog that there are "at least 14 US-registered cars at the moment and many more to come," the first dating back to the CCX of 2006. Based on its current backlog of orders for the Agera RS and electric-powered Regera, and their painstaking rate of production, the company projects that it will have its hands full for the next two years on these models alone.

Gaining US certification for its supercars is a difficult task for a low-volume manufacturer like Koenigsegg, requiring it to undergo the process for each model variant it wants to import. That's left the company focusing instead on markets in Europe and Asia, where it sells most of its output. But it's currently refocusing its energy on the North American market, showcasing its models at Stateside auto shows and franchising a string of new dealerships, including locations in New York, Chicago, Vancouver, and Calgary.
