Proterra's new electric bus can go 180 miles between charges

Extended-Range Battery Setup Carries 321 Kilowatt-Hours

Range extension, indeed. Proterra says it has an electric bus that can go as far as 180 miles on a single charge. The South Carolina-based company has cut plug-in bus deals with about a dozen municipalities across North America, this news should get the attention of a few more.

In addition to its current fast-charge battery setup that allows for less weight but also supplies less range and requires more frequent recharging sessions, Proterra is unveiling an extended-range battery configuration. That design can carries a maximum of 321 kWh of energy storage, or more than double the max capacity of the fast-charge battery. You can read more in Proterra's press release below.

Last spring, Proterra made news when it tested a battery-electric bus that traveled 700 miles in 24 hours. Factoring in the energy it took to recharge, the bus got a 27 miles-per-gallon-equivalent rating, which is more than four times the fuel economy of a typical bus (and better than a fair number of passenger vehicles, for that matter).

Last fall, Proterra's China-based competitor, BYD, showed off a 60-foot, 120-person electric bus at Houston's American Public Transportation Association Expo that could travel up to 170 miles on a single charge.
