But, in what may be some of the highest praise the car has received to date, Consumer Reports calls the Model S the best car it has ever tested.
"This car performs better than anything we've ever tested before. Let me repeat that: Not just the best electric car, but the best car," said Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports auto testing, in the video above.
Two areas where the Model S proves as good or better than any vehicle Consumer Reports had previously tested: efficiency and quietness. That's not entirely surprising, given the car's slippery design, and lack of an internal combustion engine and other noisy mechanical components.
Consumer Reports also lauds the vehicle's handling, aided by a low center of gravity due to the placement of the heavy battery. "It drives like a mixture of the best luxury car and the best sports car," said Fisher.
The Consumer Reports test vehicle was nearly $90,000, featuring the larger 85 kWh battery pack. While nobody is claiming the Model S to be a bargain, it seems everyone is in agreement that it's one of the world's best cars.
There is, however, a catch.
Consumer Reports was unable to place the Model S on their recommended list due, in part, to the lack of available reliability data on the relatively new vehicle. For more on why the Model S wasn't able to nab a "recommended" rating, head to AOL Autos.
