Elon Musk: Tesla Model S autopilot will learn from other cars

Tesla started talking about its sort-of autonomous driving tech, which CEO Elon Musk calls "autopilot," last, but Model S owners who want to see their cars do even more on their own should get ready. Musk recently Tweeted that Tesla is, "Almost ready to release highway autosteer and parallel autopark software update" and later Tweeted that, "Final corner case is dealing with low contrast lane markings (faded white on grey concrete) while driving into the sun at dusk." How and when, exactly, this will happen is not clear.

The first autopilot software update was released last October, but it was mostly just an advanced active safety system. The car could also change lanes on the highway when the driver signaled with the turn signal. With this new update, Musk Tweeted, "The car will learn over time, but there is a [minimun] caliber of starting quality." Model S EVs will also share what they are learning in some way, Musk said. Details were sadly not given in another 140 characters, and all that Tesla's Alexis Georgeson told AutoblogGreen was that there are, "No details to give yet but we'll have more to share in the coming weeks."

Musk also said that the updates would be available in all regions. Whether this sort of technology is legal in all parts of the world or now, there's no indication that Tesla intends to let you just put in a destination and let the car take you there itself. Responsibility would remain with the driver, but now the car can help you out. Well, soon, anyway.
