How to give back as you head back to school

It's easy to get wrapped up in the excitement and chaos of back-to-school season, but making a difference is still possible amidst your shopping list of binders, pencils, and notebooks.

If you're looking to physically give school supplies to students in need, Create the Good can help you start your own school supplies drive. The organization paired up with The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and their site makes it easy for you to take initiative and inspire others to donate school supplies, too.

The Kids in Need Foundation allows you to give school supplies to students in need, too, but it's less focused on starting your own drive. While the organization allows you to donate monetarily, they also accept the donation of items such as smartphones, cars, jewelry and gift cards, which are ultimately used for funds that nationally provide school supplies to students in need.

If you're looking to dive more deeply into education itself, She's the First is a wonderful organization to get involved with. If you're currently in high school or college, see if your school has a chapter! She's the First "provides scholarships to girls in low-income countries with the goal of creating first generation graduates and our next generation of global leaders."

By creating a She's the First chapter at your school -- or getting involved if your school already has a chapter -- you're helping to send girls in developing countries to school, allowing them to be the first in their families to graduate from high school. If you've already graduated, or you're a parent who's looking to get involved, you can still make a difference in a very personal way. The organization gives people the option to donate or personally sponsor a girl in another country.

Pencils of Promise also dives deeply into giving back in the realm of education, helping to build schools, train teachers, and fund scholarships for students in need. The organization recognizes that 250 million children lack basic reading and writing skills, and they're out to make a difference.

No matter how you get involved, taking the steps to give back during back-to-school season makes a huge difference in the lives of students in need.
