UPDATE: 1 Houseboat Sank, 5 Damaged in Port Washington Fire

Firefighters overcame high winds and frigid temperatures in battling the blaze on the dock, officials said.

Port Washington firefighters battled wintry elements to put down fire involving several houseboats early Monday morning on Manhasset Bay, authorities said.

Nassau Police say a man and woman, both 64, were sleeping in their houseboat at Matinecock Avenue at 2 a.m., when they were awakened by smoke and flames in the bedroom. They quickly exited the boat and called 911 for assistance.

The houseboat suffered extensive damage and sank, police said.

A second houseboat suffered extensive damage and four other boats endured varying degrees of damage. The victims from the first boat and two additional men – ages 71 and 49, from the second boat – were transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Their conditions are non-life threatening, police said.

The Port Washington Fire Department, Fire Marshall Madden, Fire Marshall Investigator Lang and Port Washington Fire Chief Brian Waterson were among those on scene, police said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the investigation will be conducted when the houseboat is raised, police said.
